Some of the online advice I'm getting suggests fixes involving reinstalling USB controllers from the Device Manager. Weird thing is i bought new one and i didn't work as well. Tried to go to the "ease of access page" to see if I somehow set the disable mouse and keyboard box. And I see an unrecognized device under the USB section in device manager. I bet a little fine sandpaper on the leads would remove any oxidation on the plug as well, though I haven't tried that since it's working without it.
