A channel is muted in alsamixer, if there is an "MM" under that specific channel/volume bar. Thank you. The commands need to have a double-dash but for some reason the comment doesn't show it (only show it as a single dash). After numerous attempts, it is finally working, alsa-force reload did the trick! Some sound system specific GStreamer packages may be missing.
I'm sure that one day PulseAudio may be the answer, but not in my case. It is very frustrating since I really like the Ubuntu "feel" better than Windows 8.
