The other think that happened about two weeks ago was that the Speedometer stopped working. Since then it hasn't stopped. I have got a software programme ran and it shows no instrument faults at all. I'd make sure there's no drainage problems. Secondly, the transponder appears to just 'sit' on top of the spindle that turns inside the gearbox and I wonder if it isn't forming a good contact. Speedo just stopped working and at the same time the fuel gauge became irattic, moveing up and down or not moving at all. Then - whatever codes may come up then, you know that these are current codes - relevant to the current issues..and not something historic and of no consequence.So - as to Another possibility is damaged wiring between the sensors and the instrument cluster. The temperature gauge never went above half way, and didn't think it was over-heating until I was driving around the hilly lanes of Cornwall, obviously getting the engine quite hot.

In answer to your problem, poor start up can be caused by a sticking EGR, which is on top of the engine connected to your inlet manifold. Address 17 on VW diagnostics is where they'd need to be looking. Glad it was sorted and for free..
